On 25 & 26 September 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres, the British reached Kansas Cross, while the Australians reached Polygon Wood & Zonnebeke. Now the 1st and 2nd ANZAC Corp will be up against the new German units, the Eingreifdivisionen, to capture Broodseinde & Tyne Cottage on October 4. After weeks of rain, the battlefields are like swamps and the trenches are filled with water. The objectives are on or behind the Flandern I Stellung, a major German line in the Ypres Salient heavy armed with bunkers and deadly weapons. The new German units proved unsuccessful and the ANZACS have reached their objectives with heavy casualties.
